Extension completed, Ballymurray
This house extension project looked at creating the kitchen as the heart of the home, while taking advantage of the views and connecting with the surrounding landscape. The design challenge was to create a new kitchen, dining and living space while keeping under a 40sqm footprint.
A vaulted ceiling with skylights and glazing on three facades allow light to flood the space, creating a bright and airy welcoming feeling. It was important to our clients that a relationship was maintained with the original stone cottage on the site, so we orientated the extension to create a courtyard space between the two dwellings. Vertical aspect north facing windows create a balance of light and shelter, framing the views beyond and creating a sense of intrigue so not everything is seen at once.
A bespoke window seat, handmade by a local craftsman, runs the width of the room, functioning as additional seating, shelf space for displaying picture frames, additional storage and also concealing the low-level radiators.
