Cottage extension planning granted
We’re thrilled that planning was granted by Roscommon County Council for this contemporary cottage extension.
The design concept
The concept for this project developed following a visit to the site, upon seeing the surrounding mature trees and traditional farm sheds. The buildings both on and nearby the site provided a strong starting point for the design concept.
It was important to remain sensitive to the original cottage, with few changes to the exterior. The transition from the old to the new is sympathetic but has a clear distinction between them. The red corrugated roofing of the adjacent agricultural sheds inspired the material selection for the cottage extension roof, creating contrast and separation to the slate roof of the original cottage. In addition, we proposed a similar dash render finish to compliment the existing render.
Old house, modern living
The renovated house and new cottage extension will fit the needs of a modern, growing family and support their lifestyle. An open plan kitchen and dining space opens out to the garden at the rear with a patio for outdoor entertaining. A chimney breast wall separates the family living room and the dining area, creating an intimate open plan effect. A den space provides growing boys a place to play and hang out with friends. To balance that, a large window seat on the other side of the house provides a quieter zone to relax with views out to a private paved area, perfect for contemplating life, reading, or a nap!
